On Sunday 3rd February 1889, the district inspector of the Royal Constabulary of Ireland, William Limbrick Martin, known locally as the Martin, came to the Church of Our Lady of Derry Beaga, with the intention of arresting Father Mac Phadín directly after the mass. In response to Healy's statement, crown prosecutors accepted a plea deal that avoided the defendant's death penalty.
